What Depression Actually Is, Because Its More Than Just Being Sad

/ by / Tags: , , , ,

Depression is doing everything you can to hide it. Because theres nothing glorified about it. Theres nothing beautiful about a bad night as you fall you your knees, in a silent scream, that no one hears because youre alone and you need to be until you get through it.

Its the sleepless nights as you lay awake at 2 am staring at the ceiling.

Its that time of year, you just get a little bit sadder for no reason.

Its the tears you dont tell people you cry because you dont really know why youre crying, you just know you need to.

Its the want and need to be around people but at the same time, you push them away.

Depression is watching across social media, everyones highlight reels and you know its not an accurate depiction of their life yet you still compare yourself to them.

Its the plans canceled last minute because you couldnt muster the strength to get out of bed.

Its your alarm going off in the morning and you just want to go back to sleep.

Depression is that cloud that doesnt seem to go away ever. And even in those happy moments, you cling to, you know its still hovering over you. Depression waits. It creeps and lurks. It waits for the best day of your life and your happiest moment just so the next one can be your worst.

Its the fear of such happiness because you know its bound to fade.

Its every good day, that are few and far between and that’s what you hang onto.

Its the struggle in explaining to people when they ask why are you depressed? You just dont know and you dont know how to fix it. Its just a feeling you cant shake but youre learning to work through.

Depression are toxic habits or people you gravitate towards.

Its drinking the way you do because at least for a moment your pain is numbed. You know the effects lead to being even more depressed the next day. And you know alcohol is a depressant but being numb helps sometimes.

Depression is the constant unbalance of things in your life.

Its either overexercising and being at the gym for hours or staying in bed for weeks immobile.

Its either sleeping too much or too little. But no matter what, youre always tired.

Its eating too much or just never being hungry. Its someone asking, ‘When was the last time you ate?’ And you actually don’t know the answer.

Its weight loss that people commend you for but you know even you couldnt help it.

Depression is people asking if youre okay and you dont respond with Im sad. You simply say, ‘I’m tired.’

Its the envy of looking at others and just wanting to be that happy. So you glamorize your own life so it appears that way.

It’s that really scary moment when you open up to someone about what it is you deal with. And that new level of friendship you reach, when they welcome you with open arms and it almost brings you to tears.

Its loving people unbelievably hard because youre still learning to love yourself.

It’s looking ahead and looking forward to certain days in your life and really appreciating everything.

And even though you might not say it, as often as you should, it’s the love you have for everyone in your life which gives you strength.

Depression is becoming addicted to anything that gives you purpose. Whether its being a perfectionist in academics or becoming a workaholic. Its becoming the most involved in a group or organization because you need something to look forward to. Its excelling in sports because it really helps to have that and a team to fall back on.

Its the need to be busy because if youre not youll spend too much time alone and everything will get worse.

But more than that, depression is the person who would do anything to make others happy because someone elses happiness is their own.

Depression is being overly observant because you know what its like to hide things, so you look for it in others.

Its being the first one willing to help and being the person you wish you had. Knowing well, there’s nothing you can say or do but be there for them and that’s okay.

But more than that, depression is a strength in you because theres nothing harder than overcoming demons within yourself.

Its the trust people have in you, knowing they can turn to you without judgment.

It’s the excitement you bring to others because even though you’re sad, you do love life.

Depression is being the happiest, saddest person, people know but there’s a bit of beauty to someone who knows both emotions at such an extreme level.

Depression is an appreciation and gratitude for life. It’s knowing no matter what happens things will get better.

Depression is hope even in moments that seem hopeless.

It’s not letting this define who you are but rather learning to live through it and being the example others can follow.

This Is How You Really Love Someone Through Depression

/ by / Tags: , , ,

The phrase ‘love yourself before someone can love you’, doesnt apply to people who have depression. Because more than anything they are learning how to love and accept themselves. But sometimes, it takes following someone elses lead to get there.

What people fail to address is the concept of truly being loved by another person is what will diminish depression. It might not go away but the closest someone can get to beating depression is learning to love another person and learning to let someone love you.

So how do you love someone like this? How do you overcome the battles you might never understand?

1. Through acceptance.

Understand that this might be something you will never understand. Internal battles within ones self, can really only be understood to the core if youve lived through it. So youll have to accept this without fully understanding it. And yes, youll see the impact it might have on the person you love and that might impact you but just know its not something youll get. But you don’t have to understand this to love them.

2. Youre going to see a side to them they hate.

Theres a reason they hide it. Theres a reason a lot of people havent seen it. But youre bound to when you love someone. That person who is positive and upbeat and lights up every room they walk into is only that way because theyve lived through whats on the other side of it. It’s going to be hard at first.

3. Understand who they are at their worst isnt them.

When they choose to let you in that close, what youll realize is how opposite this person in front of you on one of their bad days is compared to the one you fell in love with. Youll notice a change in even their tone of voice. Youll notice a glazed over look in their eyes. Everything about them will be different. Understand the negative thoughts and the words coming out of their mouth, youve never heard before arent them. Its this disease. Depression is a disease.

4. They are going to push you away.

On their bad days, the thoughts will consume them that they arent capable of being loved. Love them anyway. Even when they dont believe it. They will convince themselves they are a burden. Love them anyway. They will think you are better off without them and deserve someone healthy. Choose them anyway. They will tell you to leave more than once. Choose to stay.

5. The bad days will pass.

There will be days they wont want to get out of bed or be productive. There will be days where you look at them and you feel helpless, wishing you could fix it. There will be days you blame yourself as their partner for not making them happier. Dont think like that. This isn’t your fault and it isn’t their fault. There will days where they break down in tears and cant even articulate why they are feeling this way. In those moments, hold them. Be their strength. The best thing you can do is stand beside them on the bad days because like all things, depression is a feeling that will pass. Its a storm that will end. Believe that.

5. Youll learn to appreciate the good days.

More than anything loving someone with depression will teach you an appreciation for things youve never thought about before. Youll appreciate the good days as much as they do and thats what will make it worth it. Just like those good days give them strength on their bad days, it too will give you strength. Because trust me when I say this, the good days outweigh the bad ones.

6. It will be an emotional rollercoaster.

This will test you in a way, youve never been challenged before. But there wont be a better ride in your life. Because people with depression might know such negativity. They might take you to dark places youd never choose. But along with knowing all of that, people with depression have an ability to love so deeply. They have a compassion for others that will teach you to be better. They have eyes that see beyond what is on the surface and their ability to understand and relate to people will be the reason you fell in love with them.

7. But it will be the ride of your life and totally worth it.

People who live with depression also know how to love deeper than anyone in the world.
And if you’re lucky to be on the receiving end of that, their love will fill you in a way those bad days wont even matter. Their love will make you a version of yourself you never thought you would be, in the best way. And it will be through love, you both can continue to beat this together.

This Is How You Love Someone With Anxiety

Someone with anxiety is inclined to assume everyone is going to leave. So much so, sometimes they might be the ones to ruin a relationship. The truth is they battle something they cant control and there is a sense of insecurity within themselves when it comes to relationships. They know its difficult and they dont want to burden you with their irrational thoughts and worries. So instead, they push you away before you get the chance to leave yourself.

Remember theyre worth fighting for.

It might be hard sometimes. There might be stupid fights of scenarios theyve created in their own head. But more than anything, they’re worth fighting for. The toughest people usually are. And if you can fight with them through this, itll come back to you ten folds.

The phrase, Its okay, can never be used enough.

Its two words. Two words that stop every thought running through their head. And honestly, you can never say it enough.

Sometimes you just have to listen.

Theyre going to play out these situations in their mind. Theyre going to jump from point A to point B and sometimes youre not even going to know how they got there. The best thing you can do is let them go off on their tangent. Even if theres no solution or a fear they worry about in the future, the act of listening will help.

Dont tell them, ‘youre overreacting.’

To you, it might seem irrational. But to them whatever they open up to you about, it’s something that actually keeps them up at night. So just take it as best you can.

They probably wont sleep through the night.

Whether it takes them a while to fall asleep or stay asleep, youll be woken up by them at 3 am as they lay there wide awake. Just hold them close and the comfort in your presence might be enough to get them back to sleep.

Remember its not that they dont trust you. Theyre scared.

You say its an ex and in their mind, they jump to cheating. You say its a friend and in their mind, its someone trying to break you too up. Its not you and your relationship that isnt trusted, its every worse case scenario automatically playing out in their head and they hate themselves for it.

Answering texts timely does help more than you know.

Youve probably noticed they answer embarrassingly fast and they know not everyone is like them but it helps when people understand it. It helps when you say I cant talk now this is why Ill text you later. Silence kills anyone with anxiety. It creates problems in their mind that arent even there. It ends in apologies that arent even needed. And it adds a layer of stress to their life they wish they could control.

Dont be mad if they send a double text.

You might turn your phone on, to four texts. If you can remember its not that theyre trying to be annoying. They care. They care too much and they know it makes them look bad.

Sometimes they just wont be up for going out.

They might cancel last minute or freeze in the middle of a night out and just not be able to do it. If they tell you they have to leave dont feel a sense of guilt or obligation to go with them. Just know they tried and for whatever reason, they couldnt handle it. What sets people with anxiety off can be many things but for a lot of people, parties in which they dont know someone ends in two ways, theyll either be quiet and awkward or youll be carrying them out as they chose vodka to ease their worries.

Accept their apologies even you don’t understand.

Whether its a night out gone wrong, a triple text, saying or doing the wrong thing, they are so observant. They will pick up on the slightest shift in you and before you even realize you might be upset and they will apologize for it.

Help when you can but know when you can’t.

They would rather have ten meltdowns, biting off more than they can chew and they will never admit they can’t handle something. Theyll always say yes. Theyll never turn anyone away. And in those moments where it seems like they are going to fall apart and break just hold them. Help them if you can but know they’re inclined to not ask for help. They’re used to dealing with things on their own.

Once trust is gained theyll love you unbelievably hard.

While uncompleted to lists, plans getting messed up, texts going answered, might overwhelm someone with anxiety, if there is something they are good at it’s love. If theres something they’re strong in, its their ability to show you how much they adore and appreciate you. It might take them a while to trust you but once they do their capacity to love you will fill you in ways, you didnt know you were empty or even missing something.
